Cyprus has two international airports. Larnaca (LCA) serves the east and centre and is the closest gateway to Limassol and Aphrodite Hills, about 45 to 60 minutes away. Paphos (PFO) is the gateway to the west coast and the Akamas. Both have plenty of car hire desks in the arrivals hall.
A hire car is the practical way to see the island; public transport is limited outside the towns. Driving is on the left, a legacy of the British era, and the motorway network links the main towns quickly. Roads are good and well signed in both Greek and English. Taxis are easy in towns and ride-hailing apps operate in the cities.
The currency is the euro. Cards and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere, but it is worth carrying some cash for village tavernas, markets and small kiosks. A service charge is sometimes included on restaurant bills; if not, rounding up or leaving around 10 percent is appreciated.
The official language is Greek and English is very widely spoken. Power is 230V through UK-style three-pin sockets, so bring a UK adapter. The time zone is Eastern European Time (UTC+2, with summer daylight saving). Tap water is safe to drink, though many prefer bottled in summer. Cyprus is among the safest places in Europe, with low crime and a relaxed pace.
