The Akamas peninsula is Cyprus at its most untamed. Protected wilderness, turquoise water and remote beaches sit a short drive or boat ride from Paphos.
This two day plan starts with the Baths of Aphrodite and a boat to the Blue Lagoon, then turns to Avakas Gorge and the wild Lara coast. Keep a 4x4 in mind for day two and leave time for swimming.
Day 1
Morning
Start the day at the Baths of Aphrodite, the cool spring and surrounding paths that mark the edge of the Akamas. From here you can board a boat that follows the wild coastline into the peninsula. Book ahead in busy months so the day unfolds without rush.
Afternoon
The boat drops anchor at the Blue Lagoon. Swim in the clear turquoise water, which is the real reward of any Akamas trip, then snorkel the rocky edges if the mood takes you. Most operators allow a generous stop before the return run.
Evening
Once back on land, return to Paphos for the evening. Settle into a harbour taverna for meze or grilled catch of the day, then take a quiet walk before the short drive to your villa.
Day 2
Morning
Leave Paphos early for Avakas Gorge. The walk leads you along a stream into a dramatic canyon, where the narrow rock walls tower and close overhead. It is a proper walk that rewards steady footing and a little time.
Afternoon
Push on to Lara Beach along the unpaved tracks that call for a 4x4. Here green and loggerhead turtles nest on the protected sands each year, so keep your distance from any nests or cordons and take in the empty shoreline. The water is clear and the beach often nearly empty.
Evening
Round off the day at Coral Bay. Swim in the bay or find a table with a view of the water for a relaxed dinner, then make the short journey back to Paphos.
