Base
Limassol
Pace
A car is essential, mountain roads are slow
Best months
May to October for the villages, January to March for snow on Olympus
Good for
Wine lovers, walkers, couples seeking a change of pace from the coast
The Troodos mountains offer a clear change of pace from the Limassol coast. Cool pine air, stone villages and small family wineries lie within an hour or two of the sea, and a car makes the slow mountain roads easy enough to enjoy.
This two-day plan keeps day one among the wine villages and day two higher in the range. Base yourself near Limassol so the return each evening is simple, and leave room for unhurried tastings and short walks.
Day 1
Morning
Start with the drive from Limassol into the wine hills. Omodos sits about forty minutes north, a compact village of cobbled streets and courtyard wineries. Book a tasting of Xynisteri and Maratheftiko, then ask the winemaker about Commandaria, the world's oldest named wine.
Afternoon
From Omodos it is a short hop to Lofou, one of the prettiest stone villages in the region. Wander the quiet lanes, find a table for a simple lunch of local cheese and bread, and let the pace drop.
Evening
Linger over coffee before the descent, or head back to Limassol for dinner by the water. The return drive takes under an hour once you clear the higher villages.
Day 2
Morning
Leave early for Platres, the traditional base for the high Troodos. From the village a short path leads down to Millomeris waterfall through the pines, about twenty minutes each way.
Afternoon
Continue higher to Mount Olympus for wide views across the island. Later in the day make the longer drive west to Kykkos Monastery. If time allows, stop at one of the painted churches of the Troodos, a UNESCO World Heritage site scattered through these mountains.
Evening
The mountain roads are slow, so begin the return to Limassol by mid afternoon. You will be back on the coast in time for a late supper and a night under the stars.
Itineraries
The numbered stops follow the day-by-day plan above.
Where to stay
After the mountain air, a villa near Limassol brings you back to the sea. Choose a base with a pool and space to unwind, then step out for dinner in the old town or along the marina.
